Overview
The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) emerged in 2008 as a bold attempt to forge a unified South American identity and counter perceived external hegemonic influences, particularly from the United States. Conceived by leaders like Hugo Chávez, its constitutive treaty was signed in Brasília on May 23, 2008, with headquarters planned for Quito. Ratification by Uruguay in December 2010 granted it full legal standing, and it officially became a legal entity in March 2011. UNASUR aimed to foster economic integration, political cooperation, and social development through various councils, including defense, health, and energy. However, internal political shifts and ideological divides have led to significant membership suspensions and withdrawals, casting a long shadow over its future viability.
