Overview
The Taliban, officially the Islamic Movement of Taliban, emerged in 1994 and established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Following a two-decade insurgency, the group recaptured Kabul in August 2021 and re-established its rule. The Taliban's governance is marked by severe restrictions on human rights, particularly for women and ethnic minorities.
