Overview
The Pandyan Kingdom, also known as the Pandyas of Madurai, was a preeminent Tamil dynasty that dominated South India for over 2,000 years. As one of the "three crowned kings" of Tamilakam, alongside the Cheras and Cholas, the Pandyas wielded significant political, economic, and cultural influence. Their reign saw periods of both regional dominance and imperial expansion, notably from the 6th to 10th centuries CE and again in the 13th and 14th centuries CE. The kingdom's capital, Madurai, became a vibrant center of Tamil literature, trade, and religious activity, particularly during the Sangam period. The Pandyas are credited with fostering the development of Tamil language and arts, patronizing poets and scholars, and establishing extensive trade networks that reached as far as the Roman Empire. Their enduring legacy is etched in the monumental architecture, classical literature, and cultural fabric of South India.
