Overview

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA), officially the Palestinian Authority (PA), is the Fatah-controlled administrative body established by the 1993 Oslo Accords to exercise partial civil control over Palestinian territories in the West Bank and, until 2007, the Gaza Strip. Formed on May 4, 1994, following the Gaza–Jericho Agreement between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel, the PA was intended as a transitional governing entity. Since January 2013, it has officially used the name "State of Palestine" on official documents, reflecting its bid for broader international recognition. The PA's authority is significantly constrained by Israeli occupation, internal political divisions, particularly with Hamas, and ongoing diplomatic challenges, making its role a constant negotiation between aspirations for statehood and the realities on the ground.
