Overview

The Magnavox Odyssey, released in 1972, was the first commercial home video game console. Developed by Ralph H. Baer and his team at Sanders Associates, it was licensed to Magnavox for production and distribution. The console came with a set of built-in games, including Ping-Pong, checkers, and a shooting game, and used cartridges with jumpers to modify the games. With a price tag of around $75, equivalent to over $500 today, it was not a commercial success, selling only around 350,000 units during its lifespan. Despite this, the Odyssey paved the way for the development of later consoles, such as the Atari Pong and the Fairchild Channel F. The Odyssey's influence can still be seen in modern gaming, with many considering it a pioneering device in the industry. Its legacy continues to be celebrated by retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors, who seek out the console and its rare games.
