Overview

Fascist Italy was a totalitarian state characterized by extreme nationalism, authoritarianism, and a cult of personality around its leader. The National Fascist Party seized power through the March on Rome in October 1922, gradually dismantling democratic institutions and establishing a one-party state. This era saw significant state intervention in the economy, attempts at imperial expansion, and the suppression of all political dissent, leaving an indelible mark on 20th-century European history. The regime's ultimate collapse came with Italy's defeat in World War II and Mussolini's deposition in July 1943.
