Overview

x86, also known as the 8086 family, is a dominant family of Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC) instruction set architectures (ISAs). Its lineage traces back to the 1978 Intel 8086 microprocessor. The "x86" moniker emerged from the naming convention of its successors, such as the 80286, 80386, and 80486 processors. While often associated with IBM PC compatibility, x86's influence predates and extends beyond the PC market, permeating embedded systems and general-purpose computing. As of 2022, x86-based processors, primarily from Intel and AMD, still held a commanding share in the desktop and laptop markets, though facing increasing competition in other segments.
