A key figure in presenting Iraq's case to the world, particularly during the lead-up to the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 invasion, Aziz was known for his eloquent, often defiant, defense of Saddam's regime. His Christian background in a predominantly Muslim nation was a notable aspect of his public persona. After the 2003 invasion, he was captured by U.S. forces and later convicted of crimes against humanity, dying in prison in 2015.
