The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is a principal UN entity dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Established by the UN General Assembly on December 20, 1993, following the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights, it operates under the UN Secretariat. Headed by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the office co-ordinates human rights efforts across the UN system and provides secretariat services to the [[human-rights-council|Human Rights Council]] in Geneva. With a budget of approximately $201.6 million in 2018-2019 and around 1,300 staff in Geneva and New York, OHCHR plays a crucial role in monitoring violations, advocating for victims, and supporting states in upholding their human rights obligations, all guided by the principles enshrined in the [[universal-declaration-of-human-rights|Universal Declaration of Human Rights]].
