Overview

James Dewitt Yancey, universally known as J Dilla, was a Detroit-born record producer, rapper, and composer who fundamentally reshaped the sonic landscape of hip-hop. Emerging from the underground scene in the mid-1990s, first with Slum Village and later as a pivotal member of the Soulquarians collective, Dilla's production style was characterized by its off-kilter rhythms, soulful samples, and a distinct, almost humanistic imperfection. His solo masterpiece *Donuts* is considered seminal. Despite a tragically short career, Dilla's influence is immeasurable, impacting generations of producers and artists across hip-hop, R&B, and beyond.
